Generally speaking, it's a shameful nuisance. But aside from all the things wrong with American automotive industr, what is this nonsense about acquiring small, fuel efficient car technology? IMHO, it is a lie and a lousy PR attempt... for both of them: Chrysler and GM. GM is closing Saturn! THE Saturn that created EV-1. THE EV-1 which GM killed once upon a time, and now and forgets to mention, as if it has a special case of amnesia when it comes to electric vehicles. Instead - they are showcasing an idiotic mashup of a golf cart and a Segway. Fiats are cheap, small, unsafe, unreliable... also IMHO ugly. Hm... everything Americans do not look for in a car. Not that Chryslers are any good, of course, especially when they try to make a small car, but at least their trucks and SUVs, and their sportscars have some appeal to a large market segment. And no matter how bad a car Jeep is, someone will buy a Wrangler anyway. Want cheap and fuel efficient - there are plenty of Civics and Corollas, reliable too. Safer than a Cinquecento too. BTW, I drove this thing in Italy, it was pretty bad. But if you ever try it on an interstate highway, you would need an extra box of Valium in your cup holder... wait, it does not have a cup holder, too bad. Sure, in a big city, I would probably prefer something like Cinquecento over any American car, but that's not too big of a market. Than again, there is plenty of competition their in the US already: Smart, Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, VW golf. I hope that Fiat will put a diesel engine in Jeeps though. That would be a real winner, as far as I am concerned. Especially if they keep the price at approximately half that of other European diesel SUVs and do not change the design of the Wrangler. |
